Hiking In Maui
Hiking in Maui
Hiking in Maui is a beautiful experience with ample trails to make it a long term project. Hiking the trails throughout Maui can take anywhere from a few hours to days, whatever the hiker chooses. On the windward side of the island, there is a network of hiking trails complete with running streams, wetlands, and warm pools.
These waters as a general rule are not safe for drinking, as the bacteria level exceeds that recommended by the Department of Health. The temperature of the hiking trails range from night time temperatures that drop near of below freezing all year long to daytime temperature that reach into the hundreds.
Each trail is different, and Maui hikers need to investigate each different trail beforehand to avoid inappropriate preparations for the hike. Trails that rise over 8000 feet may experience snow in the winter months. Many of these trails offer overnight accommodations in the form of a cabin usually at around 4000 to 6000 feet.
The average length of the island’s hiking trails that are
built around craters from volcanic eruptions is 10 miles. It is
not necessary to hike the entire trail, but pay attention to the
route that you are traveling to avoid crossing trails and picking
up the wrong return trail. More extensive trails are well marked,
but there are smaller trails (4 to 5 miles) that are not as adequately
marked. Despite their comparably smaller size, who wants to get
lost for 5 miles only to turn around and walk back another 5? Numerous
small trails of less than 2 miles make up portions of other trails.
A few of the top rated hiking trails in Maui include the Sliding Sands Trail, the Waihee Ridge trail, and the Hana Waianapanapa Trail. Each trail is especially known for the diverse landscapes and the abundant wildlife along the trail, as well as its distinct Hawaiian wilderness route. Each one offers a vast variety of terrain within each trail and are known for some incredible views along the way.
The rules of hiking in Maui are basic common sense rules that apply to most hiking trails nationally. There is no public drinking or drunkenness permitted. It is unlawful to bother the wildlife in any way or to take naturally occurring elements from the parks or trail. Pets must be leashed and be obviously respectful of your surroundings. Don’t litter, don’t light fires unless they are restricted to the provided fire areas, and don’t try to sell things to visitors unless you have a permit to so.
Respect the land around you so others can too. Take in the
breathtaking scenery and reunite with nature and the stimulating
surroundings. And when you return from your hiking trip, feel free
to tell the world about the most beautiful and exquisite hiking
trails that can be found anywhere in the country.
