Boating In Maui
Boating in Maui
Boating in Maui covers all forms of water transportation for any reason. If you want to charter a sailboat, you can. If you want to take a trip on an outrigger, you can. Fishing trips, whale watching trips, waterskiing, small boat sailing, canoing, kayaking, or any other type of water toy or water transportation is available usually without reservation or last minute reservation.
When finding the boat of your choice in the Maui tourist industry, your best boat for your buck is going to come from one of two places. Small, family run businesses usually offer excellent personal service and can make special accommodations upon request, within reason. These smaller companies have had to find alternative methods of competing with the large companies and they have been able to do so by offering “authentic” Hawaiian experiences.
These smaller companies generally tend to use older bots, but because they do much of the maintenance and repairs themselves their quality is usually higher. Large companies tend to hire subcontractors, who often are concerned more with speed of job completion than the proper method of job completion. With the boating industry flooded in Maui, it is not unusual for every boat bum with a skill to offer their services for moderate fees. Large companies have a high incident rate of equipment failure.
However, some smaller companies are struggling to the point
of neglecting the basic needs of their vessels in order to make
ends meet. This is a sad case of large industry taking over the
smaller industry, but just because the deal is good, doesn’t mean
you’re getting a good deal. Some of your best deals are going to
come from the small companies, just make sure that you get a chance
to check out their boats and read the fine print before you plop
down any money.
If you’re planning on renting a small boat or chartering a larger one without any crewed assistance, you need to have a strong understanding of currents, reefs, and ocean tides. Boats do not go in a straight line across the water. The currents and winds send them off course just a little, but that little bit can really add up. Being off course by just one degree over the course of just three miles can place a vessel off course by anywhere from 1 to 5 miles, depending on the strength of the current.
Reefs present a serious danger, and a great number of them can not be seen until it is too late. Some reefs are close enough to the ocean surface that one can see little breaker waves as the water hits the shelf. In other cases, the color changes of the water can indicate sand bars and reefs. Some reefs simply can’t be seen and aren’t always appropriately charted.
Be familiar with the area you plan to sail in to help avoid disaster,
and avoid scrimping the few bucks to turn down the offered insurance
so that you don’t have to buy the boat you just left to smash to
bits on the reef. Cruise ships and day cruises are becoming
more popular and many can be found right along the ocean front.
Most resorts actually offer day cruise deals at cheaper prices to
advertise some of the better cruises. Small businesses offer outrigger
trips and can be found in port and oceanfront. Regardless of the
type of water toy or transport you are looking for, from speed boats
to windsurfers to large week long cruises, Maui offers them all.
