Due to Hawaii being home to one on the world's most active volcanoes,
Kilauea, the coast of Kohala offers the diver many lava tubes, crevices
and tunnels along with the world's largest tiger cowries. The water
off the Kohala Coast is very clear with visibility often over 100
ft with temperatures of around 72 to 80 degrees.
There are many reputable diving companies along the coastline offering friendly and professional services such as gear rental, dive trips lessons and certification. These companies are easily found either through the resorts where you may stay, brochures or pamphlets left in reception areas or heavily advertised. For the tourist, many activities companies have direct links to dive shops and schools and help organize your trip or dive lessons. For those who love snorkeling but want to take the next step and try scuba there are beginner's lessons available from most dive schools and shops.
These beginner lessons involve initial talks or videos regarding safety, the equipment and how to use it. Usually there is a hands-on demonstration and a very controlled first dive. This first dive is quite often done in the very controlled atmosphere of a swimming pool. Later lessons advance to more open waters where you will see the beauty of life beneath the sea first hand and eventually lead to certification.
Dive trips for certified divers range from 3-4 hours trips to all
day's expeditions and some companies offer a night dive or twilight
dive. Prices can vary depending on the services available and your
needs but generally start at $65 upwards. But there is no doubt
you will enjoy your Big Island diving experience.
