Big Island Ocean Activities

The Big Island of has a wonderful variety of water activities to get involved in and there are plenty of companies that offer instruction, tours and equipment hire. The best place to engage in water activities is on the west coast around the beaches of Kona and Kohala.

While on the Big Island you can find some surfing beaches around the northern part of Hilo Bay and on the Kona Coast around Kealakekua and Wailua Bays. Although the Big Island is not Hawaii's top surfing destination some good surf can still be enjoyed. There are a number of surf shops near these surf beaches where you can hire boards and other equipment plus get tuition or organize a surfing tour.

At Anaeho'omalu Bay, in front of the Royal Waikoloa Resort, is probably the best spot for windsurfing. Kaun'oa Beach on the Kohala Coast is also popular but if sailing over the ocean with a parachute while tethered a speed boat is more your style then there are several places to parasail along the Kailua-Kona coast, with providers right along the coast at the top spots. Jet skiing is always popular among the speedy set and jet skis are readily available for rent along with other equipment hire and instruction.

For the many who would prefer to be in the water rather than over it, there are lots of place to go snorkeling and view the many beautiful fish and reef in the area. You can hire your equipment and head straight for the water or book a tour and enjoy the company as well. But if deep sea diving is more your style then you have come to the right place as many hail these waters as some of the best in the world for diving. Diving in what a treat.

If you are an experienced diver then there are many charter boat tours available with the drivers able to show you the best spots and point out the many features of the area. Special night dives, extra deep dives and photography dives can also be organized. If you are still inexperienced, just learning or in deed wishing to learn, then there are many protected areas for you to enjoy the underwater marvels.

There are plenty of dive shops offering equipment hire and have organized tours available but be sure to bring your diver certification card when renting equipment or booking a tour. These dive shops also offer lessons for the beginner or for those who wish to brush up on their skills. Other water activities include kayaking and body boarding along with whale and dolphin watching.

While on the Big Island why not try SNUBA, which is a combination of snorkeling and scuba. This technique offers the advantages of scuba without all the heavy gear. Anyone over the age of 8 can learn and there is even a modified version for the over 4's. No certification is required, no heavy gear and with a maximum depth is 25 ft it is wonderful for the weak swimmers as well. There are many tours now offering the great form of water activity.

A word of caution is that Box jellyfish are known to swarm around the south shore after the full moon. The north shore has absolutely pristine white sand beaches. This is where the world-class surfing, body boarding and body surfing takes place. Warning for the north shore is that during the winter, waves can reach over twenty-five feet.

The east shore is the home of tropical nature. Windsurfing and sailing lovers gravitate to the east shore beaches. This makes sense since winds blow inward 90% of the year. And lastly, the west shore beaches. The west shore is home to off shore fishing. Do take caution during the winter since waves can reach over fifteen feet.
