Sailing In Hawaii
You can go sailing all over the world, but Hawaii is one of the most popular locations to sail. The water under your sailboat in Hawaii is not better than the water anywhere else in the Pacific Ocean, but the scenery of Hawaii is gorgeous.
Hawaii is very isolated from the rest of the world so the culture, plant life, and scenery are so unique and exotic even if you are used to living in tropical locations. Since Hawaii is driven by tourism there are countless businesses that are aimed at giving tourists a memorable experience.
The charter sailing industry is so competitive in Hawaii that you can expect to find very high quality at prices lower than you might expect.
There is a wide variety of sailboats available in Hawaii either for charter or rent. If you want to go on an extended tour of the Hawaiian Islands, you will find that there are not many options available for charter. Most of the charter sailboats are only available for small trips and tours. If you would like to go on an extended trip around the islands, you may prefer to rent a small sailboat such as a Hobie Cat.
Hobie Cats are small catamaran sailboats designed for personal use. They are very inexpensive to buy compared to other designs and therefore also much cheaper to rent. Hobie Cats are usually designed for racing and are very high performance and not extremely comfortable.
You can also rent a monohull sailboat that will offer more comfort, less performance, and a slightly higher price. Most of the major resorts will offer Hobie Cat renting services.
You can easily find yacht owners at Honolulu harbor that offer trips on their yachts. Since these trips are done on a more casual basis you have more say over where to long and how long the trip is.
Most Hawaiian sailing trips begin or end at the major marinas and ports such as KoOline on Oahu, Honokohau on the Big Island, Lihue on Kauai, and Lahaina on Maui. Poipu and Hanalai Bay on Kauai are also very popular.
Dinner cruises are very popular because they allow visitors to eat some of the best food in Hawaii while sailing around the islands and seeing some great sights. On Oahu most of the dinner cruises set out from Honolulu Harbor and move along Waikiki and Diamond Head.
On Kauai you can sail from Poipu along the Garden Isle, or from Port Allen along Makena Ridge. While on Maui you can set out from Lahaina or Maalaea and view the islands great mountain ranges. While on the Big Island you can view the Kona coast and get a great view of Mauna Loa.
The cost of any Hawaiian sailing trip depends on the type of boat and length of the trip. Renting a boat is the most cost effective solution, but a charter allows you to get more space and usually a guided tour. One to two hour trips usually cost a couple hundred dollars upwards of five hundred dollars. Daylong expeditions can cost around a thousand dollars.
