Planning a Trip To Jerez... what you need to know

Jerez is thirteen miles inland from Sanlucar. It is famous for its sherry and there are many bodegas you can visit to sample the produce. You get a tour of the vineyard and facilities and then a taste of the sherry or brandy being made there. Jerez is also well known for its flamenco music, dancing and horses. Between 24 February and 11 March is the Flamenco festival, which is world-renowned.

There is an interesting equestrian center in a nineteenth century mansion where you can watch the training sessions and get a tour of the stables. The cathedral of San Salvador dates from the eighteenth century. There is a clock museum, a Flamenco museum and also a zoo with botanical gardens. There are more than a hundred and fifty types of trees and a great variety of animals, over one thousand three hundred of them. The Arab Baths have a fascinating mixture of architectural style.

Formula One Grand Prix and motorcycle racing are held in Jerez, at the racing circuit four miles east of the town.

The main shopping district of Jerez is around the Plaza Romero Martinez and the Plaza de Arena. Most of the shopping district is pedestrianized. Jerez Centro Comercial Abierto, an open air shopping area, is worth a look. You can find locally made products and various crafts for souvenirs. Examples include wicker work and items relating to flamenco, saddling or wine. Duarte is a shop, famous for its high quality leather goods.

Restaurants are of a good standard and you can eat traditional Jerez cuisine. Remember than in Spain, it is usual to eat lunch anywhere between 1PM and 4PM and people do not tend to head out for dinner until at least 9PM. This is not a fixed rule and you might prefer to eat a lot earlier, especially if you have small children, but not everywhere will be open outside the usual eating hours. Restaurants offer such delicacies as meat and game from the hills, shellfish and fish from the sea and traditional stews. There are plenty of tapas bars around, where you can taste locally made cheeses, dried meats and other snacks, before washing it down with some local sherry or brandy. There are also a few Flamenco bars where you can watch the dancing while you enjoy some drinks and tapas.

The climate of Jerez is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The westerly winds bring moisture and humidity. The winter average temperature is around 56ºF and in the summer about 77ºF. Because of this climate, the grapes grow excellently in the area.

You should watch out for pickpockets around the tourists resorts. Driving can also be hazardous so make sure you have insurance for your family and yourself.

Jerez is an interesting city with a nice climate and is well worth a visit.
