What You Absolutely Must Know About the Red Sea If You're Planning a Trip There

The Red Sea is a very popular vacation spot, especially if you are interested in snorkeling or scuba diving. Fascinating dive sites include the SS Thistlegorm, which is a shipwreck, Ras Mohammed, Rocky Island and Elphinstone. If you to the Eilat side, you can dive at Dolphin Reef. Popular tourist resorts at the Red Sea include Sharm-el-Sheik and Hurghada.

Because the Red Sea resort in Egypt has typical desert weather, the days are usually warm and the nights are usually cool. There is hardly any humidity and the cool breezes are pleasant. There are two distinct seasons – a hot summer from May to October and a mild winter from November to April. As summer moves into winter and vice versa, there is the occasional short rainfall, perhaps just fifteen minutes. The highest temperature in the summer is around 95ºF and the coolest it gets in the winter is 57ºF. Sinai is slightly more humid than other areas along the Red Sea coast and gets slightly more rain. There is rarely much cloud so sunbathing is possible nearly all the time. The breeze can mask the heat from the sun and it is a good idea to cover up, at least between 10AM and 2PM, or wear a high factor sunscreen especially if you are fair skinned.

There is plenty to see around the Red Sea including Roman Empire quarries, Coptic monasteries, Muslim shrines, Ottoman fortresses and the remote Pharaonic emerald mines. The Eastern Desert is beautiful.

As well as snorkeling and scuba diving, you could play golf or go horse riding. You could try camel riding too. There are glass-bottomed boat tours. There are also motorcycling, quad and go-cart rings. You can play squash, tennis or volleyball if you enjoy sports.

Getting around the resorts are easy, with plenty of buses, minibuses or taxis being available. Shopping is plentiful, with the choice of modern shopping malls or traditional souks. Expect to have to haggle over prices because few things are priced. It depends how much you are willing to pay for an item and whether the shopkeeper will let you have it for that amount. Haggling can be fun but remember it is very rude to agree on a price and then back out. Possible bargains include coffee tables, carpets, mats and Egyptian plates. Remember that if you try to take shells, coral or any sea creature, alive or dead, back home with you, you risk a heavy fine.

In Sharm and Hurghada, nightlife tends to be colorful and loud. There are plenty of disco bars and nightclubs. If you prefer something a little quieter, head to El Gouna or Dahab for smaller bars and good eateries. You can find good restaurants throughout the Red Sea resort and choose from Middle Eastern food, Indian, Chinese, Russian, Dutch, German and many other types of cuisines. Vegetarian food is widely available but check the ingredients because chicken stock is used widely in the so-called ‘vegetarian’ meals.

Alcohol is served only in the resorts, at the duty-free areas and on licensed premises so don’t expect to find it in the shops or supermarkets.

The Red Sea resort in Egypt is a great place for a vacation. There are many activities and excursions to choose from or if you prefer a relaxing vacation, sun is pretty much guaranteed.

Travel is the maximum amount of movement that a suspension system is capable of. Currently, this ranges from about 2" at the short end of the scale up to 10" at the long travel end.
