Salzburg is one of the most beautiful travel destinations you can find in Europe.  With scenic mountain cliffs surrounding the city and a flowing river running through the middle, tourists enjoy visiting the magnificent castles and palaces that scatter the countryside.  Salzburg offers a number of unique attractions, including stately churches and musical exhibitions.  The town was the setting for the popular musical The Sound of Music and home to Mozart.

German is the official language of Salzburg and most nationalities do not require a visa to visit.  You can fly directly into the city and buses run around the town throughout the day and night.  Bicycles are the most popular form of transportation around the city and can be hired at several locations around town.  The city also has a reliable public transportation line that can be accessed conveniently with a Salzburg card.  Besides unlimited use of the city’s buses, the Salzburg card also includes admission to area museums, zoos, and other attractions and provides a discount on tour services.

Salzburg offers a number of indoor attractions so tourists can enjoy a nice holiday anytime of year.  Summers are quite warm and pleasant with temperatures around 25°C (77F), while winter temperatures are often subzero at night with days only reaching 4°C (40F).  The region is covered with snow in winter, making an ideal ski vacation. 

There are such a wide variety of things to see and do in Salzburg that it would be impossible to take in all the attractions in just one visit.  Majestic cathedrals and churches display the beauty of ancient Baroque and Renaissance architecture.  Museums tell of Salzburg’s colorful history and a variety of musical venues can be found around the town.

One of the city’s most popular attractions is the Hohensalzburg Fortress, standing above the city atop the rocky cliffs on the eastern side.  This castle was originally built to protect the city from Bavarians in older times, and was rebuilt in the 16th century with the addition of the grand state apartments.  Visitors can walk the grounds or take a guided tour, enjoy concessions, and visit the museums. 

St. Peter’s Church is one of the favored churches to visit in Salzburg.  The impressive structure was originally built in the 9th century, and shows evidence of early Renaissance décor.  Next to the church, visitors can walk through the ancient cemetery.  Catacombs are carved throughout the rocks and can be viewed through a guided tour.

Other popular Salzburg attractions include the Salzburg Zoo, the Salzburg Toy Museum, and Mozart Square, home of the Salzburg Institute of Music.  Mozart’s birthplace and home are favorites to visit as well.  There are a variety of guided tours offered throughout the city.  Visitors can see the sights from horse drawn carriages, on bicycles, or from a helicopter.  Some tours are more specialized, like the Sound of Music tour, and some include dinner.  Boat and limo tours are also available.

Visitors are not faced with too many health or safety concerns while traveling in Salzburg.  Use commonsense and secure any valuables and take care to guard against hypothermia if you are visiting in cold conditions.
