Delhi is a remarkable city that integrates ancient history with modern life and technologies.  The hustle and bustle of India’s third largest city is interrupted with monuments and landmarks throughout the city that remind you of India’s rich and varied past.  This cultural city is the most popular destination for travelers to India.

Delhi can be reached directly by plane, and then buses and taxis can be used to get around town.  Opt for cabs during rush hour because public transportation is typically overcrowded during these times and always use accredited taxi services and official DTC buses to avoid safety hazards and potential danger. 

The best times to visit Delhi are in the spring and fall, between September and November or February and April.  These months have pleasant temperatures and are rather dry.  Summer begins in April and lasts through June with temperatures reaching as high as 45°C.  Then the monsoon season starts, bringing cooling rains until September.  The winters in Delhi can be quite harsh with temperatures dropping as low as 5°C.

There are a wide variety of attractions worth visiting while vacationing in Delhi.  Monumental landmarks throughout the city represent both modern Indian architecture as well as ancient structures that tell of the country’s rich history.  The Rashtrapati Bhavan reflects the colonial age of India and is the official home of the country’s president.  The Qutab Minar is a piece of 13th century India and one of the few remaining representations of this early medieval architecture.  Carvings and religious inscriptions adorn the walls of the Minar.

There are several temples, both old and new, that are popular Delhi attractions.  The Bahai Temple, or Lotus Temple, is one of the most recent additions and is built in the fascinating shape of a lotus flower.  There are also a number of nearby destinations that make exciting and worthwhile daytrips from Delhi, like the Bharatpur bird sanctuary, located 180 km away and home to over 400 species of birds.

India is a religious country with a number of cultural customs that visitors should take care to follow to avoid conflicts.  Locals can be quite offended if they are touched on the head and it is important to never point the soles of your feet toward anyone or any religious image.  Other customs to follow include only allowing your right hand to touch food and appropriate coverings for females while traveling through Muslim areas. 

Delhi  is a major city with a number of scams directed toward tourists as well as typical crime rates so it is important to follow normal travel safety precautions.  Secure your valuables and beware of the street vendors near the center of the city.  Avoid prolonged eye contact and lengthy conversations with the locals, especially if you are female.

There are also a number of health concerns to be aware of while traveling in Delhi.  Before your trip, update your immunizations and consider additional vaccines against hepatitis, yellow fever, cholera, and typhoid.  Avoid ice and ice cream products during your stay and drink bottled water.  Make sure vegetables are cooked and fruits are peeled to control bacterial infections.  Diarrhea is common among most tourists, but is usually not severe, and protection from malaria is also necessary in some areas.  International health insurance is recommended and it is also smart to bring your own syringes for emergency shots to minimize the risk of Aids.
