New South Wales is one of the most popular regions of Australia for travelers.  From the mountainous wilderness to the miles of sandy beaches, New South Wales is a varied land with just as many different activities to enjoy.  If you are planning a holiday to the New South Wales region, it is best to fly into Sydney and then visit the other cities by rental car or using the extensive rail system available.

The weather in New South Wales is mild and sunny for most of the year, with the exception of the Snowy Mountains where it is typically cold enough for snow skiing during the winter.  During the summer months, between December and February, you can enjoy moderate temperatures between 19°C and 26°C with water temperatures of about 22°C.  The area can be quite crowded during these times as students enjoy their breaks.

The winter months, from June to August, are not much cooler with temperatures between 9°C and 18°C and water temperatures around 18°C.  Areas of higher elevation are somewhat cooler during winter, often seeing snow in parts of the mountains.  Spring and fall are just as moderately warm, but October through March is considered the rainy season and can be rather wet.

The most popular destination in New South Wales is the beautiful cultural city of Sydney.  The world renowned opera house is a must see, especially from a relaxing cruise along the breathtaking harbor.  Nightlife in Sydney is unsurpassed, with clubs and cafes featuring live music for every taste and numerous restaurants, shops, and bars.

The North Coast, just above Sydney, is home to miles of pristine coast that are favored by local surfers.  Here, you can arrange a kayak tour through the bush land or enjoy a carriage ride through the vineyards.  Hiking is abundant and there are several gorgeous waterfalls, or you can sit back and relax while watching the varied wildlife, including whales, dolphins, and sea birds.

The Blue Mountains are further inland to the west of Sydney and derived there name from the obvious blue haze throughout the region.  This is caused by oil evaporating from the forests of eucalyptus trees.  The area also boasts beautiful scenery with waterfalls, cliffs, and lush, green valleys.  Just to the south, the Snowy Mountains are just as lovely.  Enjoy skiing in the winter or walking through fields of wildflowers in spring.  Rafting, mountain biking, and fishing are popular in these areas.

Many visitors come to New South Wales to spend time in the rugged, but beautiful, outback region.  Mungo National Park is home to the oldest known ceremonial burial site and ancient Aboriginal artwork can be seen in Mutawintji National Park.  The beauty of the Australian outback has inspired thousands of artists around the world.

Wherever you plan to spend your time in New South Wales, there are hundreds of attractions and activities to thrill everyone in your group.  Remember that you will need three prong electrical plugs that do require an adaptor for UK appliances and always secure your valuables, especially in the crowded city of Sydney.  Currents can be strong in some areas, so swim only in designated areas and remember to bring plenty of sunscreen.
